Swimming
The South Hams offers an incredible
choice of safe, sandy beaches with very good surf at Bantham and
Bigbury, where lifeguards are present. Good swimmers will love the
estuary swim, gliding on the outgoing tide towards the sea, or in
reverse when the tide comes rushing in, towards the quay at Bantham.
Surfing
Bantham and Bigbury-On-Sea are very
popular with surfers, kite surfers and body boarders.
In fact, Bigbury has been voted one of the top 10 surfing beaches in
"The Times - Britain's Top 50 Beaches" supplement. There is an
excellent surf school (Discovery Surf) based in Bigbury car park,
which offers lessons to all ages.
Golf
Bigbury Golf Course only minutes away
is a very friendly club offering great value golf with stunning
views over the Avon estuary towards Bantham and Burgh Island. On the
other side of the estuary lies the spectacular Thurlestone course,
which is a good test especially in windy conditions.
Tennis
Ivybridge has an indoor centre with
excellent facilities. Tennis can also be enjoyed at Thurlestone Golf
Club, which boasts 12 courts, both grass and all-weather and courts
can be hired at nearby Modbury and Aveton Gifford.
Bird watching
The Tidal Road area between Bigbury
and Aveton Gifford is filled with a wonderful array of birds -
Oystercatchers, Curlews, Sandpipers, Redshanks, Egrets and Swans to
name but a few.
Fishing
There are opportunities to fish for
Bass on the Avon, whilst sea trips are available from Salcombe,
Kingsbridge and Bigbury-on-Sea.
